Stepfather: A Thrilling New Take on a Classic Tale

In 1987, Terry O’Quinn delivered a memorable performance as the lead character in the horror thriller The Stepfather. The film was so successful that it spawned two sequels, Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy in 1989 and Stepfather 3 in 1992. Fast forward to 2009, a remake of The Stepfather was released. Now, a new thriller titled Stepfather is in the works, starring Taye Diggs and Tamar Braxton, set to premiere on Tubi in 2026. While not officially a remake, the plot bears striking similarities to the original.

Variety has reported that Diggs will portray Darnell, a survivor of childhood abuse whose unresolved trauma drives him to seek the perfect family he never had. When his new family fails to meet his expectations, Darnell takes matters into his own hands by eliminating them to start anew. Production is currently underway in Los Angeles, with Chris Stokes directing and co-writing the screenplay with Marques Houston.

The official synopsis reveals that Darnell believes his new wife Asia and her daughters could be the ideal family he has been searching for. However, tensions escalate as they uncover his deadly pattern, making it difficult for Darnell to dispose of them as planned. The film bears resemblance to The Stepfather but with a twist involving multiple stepdaughters.

Stokes and Houston, known for their collaboration on The Stepmother, are now working on Stepfather, continuing their streak of thrilling projects. The film is being produced by Footage Films Studios, with Stokes and Houston serving as executive producers. The duo's reunion for a movie that echoes The Stepfather's premise but is not a direct remake raises curiosity among fans.
