Federal Judge Grants Injunction for Tufts University PhD Student Rumeysa Ozturk to Work on Campus

A federal judge in Boston has granted an injunction allowing Tufts University PhD student and pro-Palestinian activist Rumeysa Ozturk to work on campus. The judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate her status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a database used to track foreign students on visas. Ozturk's record was terminated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the same day she was taken into custody in March.

Ozturk expressed gratitude for the ruling and hopes that others do not face similar injustices. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has not yet commented on the matter. Ozturk's arrest in Somerville, Massachusetts, was captured in a viral video and drew criticism from civil rights groups. She was detained for 45 days in Louisiana after her student visa was revoked due to her pro-Palestinian activism.

Following her release, Ozturk resumed her studies at Tufts but was unable to work or teach due to the administration's refusal to restore her SEVIS record. Her lawyers sought an order from Chief U.S. District Judge Denise Casper to reinstate the record to prevent further harm to her academic and career development. Casper, appointed by President Barack Obama, criticized the government's inconsistent justifications for terminating Ozturk's record and noted that she had complied with the rules for foreign students.

The ruling allows Ozturk to continue her academic pursuits without further hindrance. The case highlights the challenges faced by foreign students engaged in activism and the importance of protecting free speech rights. The decision underscores the need for fair and lawful treatment of individuals, regardless of their political views or activities.
