Psychedelic Legacy: The Grateful Dead Art Exhibition at Chambers Project Gallery

The Chambers Project Gallery in Grass Valley, CA, recently unveiled a comprehensive exhibition showcasing original Grateful Dead artwork, celebrating the band's visual legacy spanning six decades. Curated by Brian Chambers, the exhibition features historic posters, album covers, sketches, and rare artifacts that defined the psychedelic aesthetic of the American counterculture. The opening event included a one-night-only concert at the Bodhi-Hive, where guests were immersed in a psychedelic cathedral adorned with intricate mandala tie-dye tapestries and vibrant lights.
The celebration continued with a performance by White Lightning, a Grateful Dead supergroup featuring Grahame Lesh and other talented musicians. The event seamlessly integrated sound and visual art, creating a unique experience for attendees. The exhibition at the Chambers Project Gallery showcases original works from renowned artists such as Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Wes Wilson, as well as collaborations with Bill Walker and Owsley "Bear" Stanley.
Rick Griffin's contributions to the exhibition are significant, with 20 original works on display, including rare pieces like the pen-and-ink Hawaiian Aoxomoxoa drawing used for the Dead's 1969 album. The exhibition also features historic pieces like the original 1900 Skeleton Amid Roses illustration by Edmund J. Sullivan, reinterpreted by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse for the Grateful Dead's 1971 self-titled album. Walker's Anthem of the Sun painting, inspired by a psychedelic experience with Phil Lesh and Tom Constanten, is another highlight of the exhibition.
The exhibition showcases five historic Acid Test posters by Paul Foster, hand-colored by Owsley "Bear" Stanley, who played a significant role in the Dead's history. Presented in collaboration with PACT: Psychedelic Arts and Culture Trust, the exhibition aims to be a dynamic celebration of Dead culture, with plans for auxiliary exhibitions dedicated to related art forms. The exhibition at the Chambers Project Gallery is a testament to the enduring influence of the Grateful Dead and their impact on American culture.
