Search for Missing Union High School Football Coach Travis Turner Intensifies with K-9 Units

The search for missing Union High School football coach Travis Turner, who vanished over two weeks ago, may benefit from the use of K-9 units. Dr. Ken Lang, a retired law enforcement veteran and criminology professor, suggested that cadaver dogs could help locate any remains as the scent intensifies with decay. While it is uncertain if Turner, 46, has passed away, he was last seen on December 20 entering a wooded area behind his Virginia home carrying a firearm. Lang emphasized the challenges of using K-9 units in searches, noting that the dogs can be thrown off by wildlife carcasses and require rest and sustenance after a few hours of work.

The United States Marshals Service, which joined the search for Turner on December 1, has utilized K-9 units, drones, and a helicopter in the rural and remote wooded area. Lang highlighted the difficulties of nighttime searches in cold weather and the potential interference from animals scavenging on a body. Authorities focus on clothing and remnants to narrow down the search in the Appalachian Mountains region, likening it to finding a needle in a haystack. Despite ongoing efforts, the Virginia State Police have not provided any updates on the case as of Tuesday, December 9.

Following Turner's disappearance, he was charged with child pornography and solicitation of a minor. The Turner family has cooperated with law enforcement, allowing multiple searches of their homes and properties. The search for Turner continues, with the hope that K-9 units and other resources will aid in locating him and bringing closure to the situation.
