Jon Stewart to Receive Cronkite Award for Comedic News and Commentary

Jon Stewart will be recognized at the annual Walter Cronkite Awards for Excellence in Political Journalism for his work in the new award category of Comedic News and Commentary. The judges praised Stewart as a pioneer and vital voice in his field, commending his insightful satire and solid research. Stewart's segment on DOGE and its budget cuts was highlighted as a prime example of his impactful work.
Other honorees at the awards ceremony include NBC's Peter Alexander, 60 Minutes' Scott Pelley, Bill Owens, and Maria Gavrilovic, as well as PBS Newshour's Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett. Rachel Maddow, John Dickerson, and Julio Vaqueiro will also be recognized for their contributions to political journalism. Pelley's recent remarks about pushback on hard-hitting segments at 60 Minutes have sparked discussions about journalistic independence.
In his award-winning segment "The Rule of Law," Pelley and his team reported on President Trump's orders targeting law firms with ties to him or his allies. The Cronkite Awards will also honor local news reporter Spencer Humphrey and NBC Affiliate KSL-TV 5 for their fact-checking efforts. The ceremony will take place on December 12 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with many notable journalists in attendance.
Stewart's recognition comes after his return to The Daily Show in 2024, earning Emmy nominations for his work on the show. While Stewart and Dickerson are not expected to attend the ceremony, they will share video messages. The significance of the Cronkite Awards is highlighted by the shared history of Dickerson and Pelley anchoring the same CBS Evening News program that made Walter Cronkite a broadcasting legend.
