Michigan Wolverines Fire Head Coach Sherrone Moore for Inappropriate Relationship: Interim Coach Named

Michigan has fired football coach Sherrone Moore due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Athletic director Warde Manuel stated that this behavior violates university policy, leading to Moore's termination. Moore, who had a record of 8-5 in his first season and 9-3 this year, was let go for cause, so the university will not have to buy out the remaining years of his contract.
The Wolverines are now in search of their third coach in four years following Moore's dismissal. Moore, who was the team's former offensive coordinator, took over as head coach after the 2024 national championship win. However, his tenure was marred by a sign-stealing scandal that resulted in a suspension for two games in 2025. The NCAA later extended the suspension to three games, including next year's opener against Western Michigan.
Biff Poggi, who stepped in for Moore during his suspension, will serve as the interim coach for the Wolverines. The team, currently ranked 18th with a 9-3 record, is scheduled to face No. 14 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31. The sudden coaching change comes amidst a busy coaching cycle in college football, with Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for LSU.
Michigan's decision to part ways with Moore underscores the university's zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior. The Wolverines will now focus on finding a new head coach to lead the team in the upcoming seasons.
