Disney+ Cancels TV Adaptation of 'Holes' Despite Promising Pilot

Disney+ has decided not to move forward with the TV adaptation of the popular Louis Sachar novel "Holes," despite initially ordering a pilot earlier this year. The novel, which won a National Book Award and a Newbery Medal, was the basis for Disney's successful 2003 film of the same name. The story follows a teenager named Stanley Yelnats who is wrongly sent to a juvenile detention camp called Camp Green Lake, where he uncovers a mysterious connection to his family while digging holes in the desert.

The new Disney+ pilot for "Holes" featured a gender-bent storyline, focusing on a teenage girl named Hayley at a detention camp instead of a boy. The cast included Shay Rudolph as Hayley, Greg Kinnear as the warden, and Aidy Bryant as camp counselor Sissy, among others. The pilot was set to explore the dynamics among Hayley and her fellow campers at Camp Yucca, with Alina Mankin as the writer, Liz Phang as the showrunner, and Jac Schaeffer as the director.

Despite the promising cast and creative team attached to the project, Disney+ ultimately decided not to move forward with the TV adaptation of "Holes." The pilot, produced by Walden Media and 20th Television, aimed to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved story, but it seems that the project will not be continuing on the streaming platform. Fans of the novel and the original film may be disappointed by this decision, but there are still many other exciting projects to look forward to on Disney+.
