Tragedy Strikes: Airstrike on Hospital in Myanmar's Rakhine State Leaves Over 30 Dead

Myanmar's military government has confirmed an airstrike on a general hospital in western Rakhine state, resulting in the deaths of over 30 individuals, including patients, medical personnel, and children. The military stated that armed groups, such as the Arakan Army and the People's Defense Force, had used the hospital as their base, prompting the military to conduct security measures and counter-terrorism operations against the hospital buildings. The United Nations condemned the attack as part of a broader pattern of strikes harming civilians and civilian objects across the country.
A senior official for rescue services in Rakhine reported that 34 people, including patients and medical staff, were killed, and around 80 others were injured when an army jet fighter bombed the general hospital in Mrauk-U township, controlled by the Arakan Army. The World Health Organization expressed shock over the attack on the hospital, disrupting access to healthcare for entire communities. The Arakan Army, seeking autonomy from Myanmar's central government, vowed to seek accountability and justice in collaboration with global organizations and take decisive action against the military.
Mrauk-U, located northwest of Yangon, was captured by the Arakan Army in 2024. The group, known for its well-trained and well-armed military wing, initiated an offensive in Rakhine in 2023, seizing key regional army headquarters and townships. Following the hospital attack, the army conducted night-time airstrikes in five Rakhine towns, resulting in civilian casualties. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military takeover in 2021, leading to widespread opposition and armed resistance against military rule, plunging the country into conflict.
