Iraq's Federal Supreme Court Ratifies 2025 Parliamentary Election Results: Next Steps in Government Formation

Iraq's Federal Supreme Court has officially approved the final results of the 2025 parliamentary elections, marking a significant milestone in the process of establishing a new government. The court's statement confirmed that the election procedures adhered to all constitutional and legal requirements. This ratification comes after the recent elections on Nov. 11, during which the ruling Shiite Coordination Framework announced its formation as the largest bloc in the 329-member parliament, granting it the authority to nominate the next prime minister.
With the ratification of the election results, the Iraqi president is mandated to call for the new parliament to convene within 15 days. The newly elected Council of Representatives will then proceed to take the constitutional oath and elect a new speaker. Following this, the parliament will conduct a vote to select the new president, in accordance with the ethno-sectarian power-sharing system established post the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. As per this system, the presidency is designated for a Kurd, the parliament speaker's position for a Sunni Muslim, and the prime minister's role for a Shiite Muslim.
