Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar Condemns Racial Profiling and Discrimination in Twin Cities

Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar revealed that her son was stopped by federal immigration agents and asked to prove his citizenship after a visit to Target. Omar stated that her son was able to show his passport ID, which led to his release. She emphasized that her son always carries his passport with him for identification purposes. Additionally, Omar mentioned a previous incident where ICE agents entered a mosque where her son was praying but left without any issues. She expressed concern about racial profiling targeting young Somali men in areas where her son could be at risk.

Recently, federal agents intensified their efforts in the Twin Cities to target undocumented Somali immigrants. This surge followed President Trump's negative comments about Somali immigrants and Omar herself. In response to these actions, Omar wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE, accusing them of racial profiling and using unnecessary force in the Twin Cities. She linked the surge to Trump's discriminatory remarks about Somali people, highlighting that the majority of Somalis in the U.S. are American citizens.

Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the U.S., with over 90% of Somalis being U.S. citizens. Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has been vocal about the discrimination faced by the Somali community. The incidents involving her son and the mosque visit have raised concerns about racial profiling and targeting of Somali individuals by federal immigration authorities. The situation underscores the need for addressing issues of discrimination and ensuring the protection of all individuals, regardless of their background.
