Zootopia 2" Breaks Box Office Records: A Look at the Animated Sequel's Global Success

"Zootopia 2" has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year, raking in an impressive $1.13 billion globally in just 20 days. The animated sequel has surpassed Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" remake, which earned $1.03 billion. Despite this success, China's "Ne Zha 2" remains the biggest release of 2025 with $1.9 billion.

Disney's upcoming film, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," is anticipated to compete for the top spot in 2025, following the success of its predecessors. "Zootopia 2" achieved the $1 billion milestone in just 17 days, making it the fastest PG film to do so. The sequel has become the seventh-highest-grossing animated film in history, surpassing the original "Zootopia" and "Moana 2."

"Zootopia 2" continues to dominate the box office, earning $131.1 million over the weekend from 52 territories. The film's overseas total now stands at $877 million, with China contributing a significant $502 million. Despite facing challenges in the Chinese market, the movie has performed exceptionally well, becoming the second animated film to cross $1 billion internationally.

On the other hand, Disney's "Ella McCay" faced a disappointing weekend, grossing only $300,000 from five territories. The political dramedy also struggled in North America, earning just $2.1 million and marking Disney's lowest start in recent times. With negative reviews and poor audience reception, the film's prospects for improvement are slim. However, the studio can look forward to the release of "Avatar: Fire and Ash" to end the year on a positive note.
