Creators Coalition on AI: Advocating for Ethical Practices and Rights in the Entertainment Industry

A new coalition called Creators Coalition on AI has been established by a group of entertainment industry workers to advocate for the rights of creators in the face of the expanding AI industry. The coalition, founded by individuals like writer-director Daniel Kwan, actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natasha Lyonne, and producer Janet Yang, aims to represent all creators and their skilled workers, including podcasters, digital content creators, and newsletter writers. Through public pressure, collective action, potential litigation, and legislation, the group seeks to address the unethical business practices of major AI companies that pose a threat to creators.
The entertainment industry has been confronting the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence tools, with concerns raised by many artists about the unauthorized use of their likenesses or work by AI tools. Some studios have collaborated with AI companies for various purposes, such as marketing and visual effects. For instance, Walt Disney Co. recently signed a licensing agreement with OpenAI to utilize Disney characters in the startup's text to video tool Sora, sparking mixed reactions within the industry.
In response to these developments, the Creators Coalition on AI plans to establish an AI advisory committee to set common standards, definitions, and best practices, as well as ethical and artistic protections for the use of AI. The group emphasizes principles such as transparency, consent, control, and compensation in AI tool usage, while also addressing concerns about job displacement, misuse, deepfakes, and preserving the human element in the creative process. The coalition stresses a commitment to responsible, human-centered innovation in the realm of AI.
The coalition's formation was inspired by Daniel Kwan's work on a documentary about AI, with efforts to establish the group commencing earlier this year. Notable figures like Natalie Portman, Greta Lee, Kirsten Dunst, and Orlando Bloom have already signed on as supporters of the coalition. The Creators Coalition on AI aims to bridge the gap between those advocating for swift AI adoption and those prioritizing ethical considerations, positioning itself as a unifying force in the evolving landscape of AI and creativity.
