Netflix has officially renewed the Japanese period-action series "Last Samurai Standing" for a second season following its global success. The show is set in Japan's Meiji period and revolves around a deadly competition among 292 samurai warriors at Kyoto's Tenryuji Temple, with a grand prize of 100 billion yen. The protagonist, Shujiro Saga, portrayed by Okada Junichi, enters the contest to save his ailing family.
"Last Samurai Standing" quickly rose to the top of Netflix's Global Top 10 (Non-English Series) chart and garnered popularity in 88 countries. In Japan, it held the No. 1 spot for four consecutive weeks, solidifying its status as a beloved series. Notably, the show made history by being the first all-Japanese production nominated in the best foreign language series category at the Critics' Choice Awards.
Okada Junichi, who plays the lead role, also serves as a producer and action choreographer on the series. The show boasts an ensemble cast of renowned Japanese actors, including Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, and Masahiro Higashide, among others. The collaboration between Okada and director Fujii Michihito has been instrumental in the success of the production.
Expressing his excitement for the second season, Okada stated his eagerness to delve back into the thrilling world of "Last Samurai Standing" and deliver even more action-packed episodes. Director Fujii echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the show's international success and promising an even more spectacular Season 2.
Based on Imamura Shogo's "Ikusagami" novel series, which won the 166th Naoki Prize in 2021, "Last Samurai Standing" is a captivating blend of historical drama and intense action.
