Steve Morse Opens Up About Departure from Deep Purple and Future Plans

Former Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse recently discussed his departure from the band and the unlikelihood of a return in a new interview. Morse shared that some band members were glad for his exit as they wanted to focus on a more straightforward rock sound, which did not align with his writing style. He officially left Deep Purple in July 2022 to care for his wife battling cancer, leading to guitarist Simon McBride taking his place.
Morse reflected on his time with Deep Purple, acknowledging the physical and mental strain of long tours. He mentioned that his musical strengths were better suited for his other projects with FLYING COLORS, THE DIXIE DREGS, and the STEVE MORSE BAND. Despite the challenges, Morse expressed respect for Deep Purple's current direction and their commitment to making great music.
The guitarist emphasized the importance of finishing his time with the band properly and hoped to remain involved in future events related to the group's history. Morse also highlighted the impact of touring on his decision to leave, citing the need for shorter legs and tour fatigue. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to introduce Deep Purple to new audiences during his tenure with the band.
In a candid interview, Morse revealed that he left Deep Purple due to the lengthy tours and his wife's health emergency. He expressed understanding of the band's initial reaction to his departure and wished them well in their continued success. Morse had been with Deep Purple since 1994, writing and recording eight studio albums with the group, including the 2021 covers collection Turning To Crime.
Simon McBride, Morse's replacement, shared his surprise at being asked to step in for Morse temporarily in late 2021. McBride had previously toured with members of Deep Purple and ultimately took over Morse's role in the band. Despite the unexpected turn of events, McBride expressed readiness to contribute to Deep Purple's future endeavors.
