Whitney Hansen Appointed as Head Coach of Black Ferns: A New Era in Women's Rugby
Whitney Hansen has been appointed as the new head coach of the Black Ferns, succeeding Allan Bunting. She is the second woman to hold this position after Vicky Dombroski in 1994. Hansen will be joined by assistant coaches Tony Christie and Riki Flutey, with the wider coaching and management group to be finalized in the new year. She will lead the team through 11 Tests next year and the upcoming series against the British and Irish Lions in 2027. Hansen expressed her excitement about the opportunity and her commitment to developing women's rugby in New Zealand.
As the daughter of former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, Whitney Hansen brings a wealth of rugby knowledge and experience to the role. She takes over the Black Ferns after their third-place finish at this year's world championships, where they were defeated by Canada in the semi-finals. Hansen previously served as an assistant coach during the 2022 tournament when the Black Ferns claimed victory on home soil. Her appointment has been welcomed by New Zealand Rugby chairman David Kirk, who praised her character, commitment, and coaching abilities.
Hansen's coaching journey began in 2017 at Canterbury University, where she coached at provincial age group level and served as the set piece coach for Canterbury in the Farah Palmer Cup. She later became the assistant coach for Matatū, helping them win the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki title before taking on the role of head coach. Hansen also led the Black Ferns XV as the inaugural head coach last year. Her appointment signifies a new chapter for the Black Ferns as they aim to build on their legacy and inspire the next generation of women's rugby players and coaches in New Zealand.
