Rays Trade Shane Baz to Orioles for Promising Young Talent: A Look at the Players Involved

The Tampa Bay Rays have made a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, sending right-handed pitcher Shane Baz to the Orioles in exchange for outfielder Slater de Brun, catcher Caden Bodine, right-handed pitcher Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn, and a Competitive Balance Round A pick. Baz, a former top prospect, had a 4.87 ERA in his first full season in the majors in 2025 with the Rays. Despite some struggles, he recorded 176 strikeouts in 166.1 innings.
In return for Baz, the Rays are acquiring a group of promising young players from the Orioles. De Brun, an 18-year-old outfielder, was a first-round pick in the 2025 MLB Entry Draft. Bodine, a 21-year-old catcher, impressed with a .326 batting average in his first pro ball experience in Single A. Forret, also 21, posted a 1.58 ERA in 19 games across Double-A and High-A. Overn, who split time between High-A and Double-A, hit .249 with 13 home runs in 114 games.
This trade adds depth and potential to both teams' rosters. The Rays are receiving highly ranked prospects from the Orioles system, including de Brun (No. 6), Bodine (No. 10), Forret (No. 11), and Overn (No. 30). The deal follows the Orioles' recent trade of Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder Taylor Ward. The exchange of young talent between the Rays and Orioles sets the stage for future growth and development for both organizations.
