John Fogerty Reflects on Ike & Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary' Cover: A Tribute to Musical Influence

John Fogerty recently appeared on the Track Star online quiz show, where he was challenged to identify songs by other artists that influenced his career. He recognized Ike & Tina Turner's cover of his band Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit "Proud Mary" and shared his thoughts on the rendition. Fogerty recalled hearing Tina Turner's version on the radio and feeling proud of her success. The original "Proud Mary" was released in 1969 and became a hit for CCR, while Ike & Tina's version, released in 1971, reimagined the song with a funky groove and soulful crescendo. The Turners' cover became their highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 4.
John Fogerty praised Tina Turner's rendition of "Proud Mary" and expressed his happiness for her success. He acknowledged the transformation of the song while appreciating its core essence. During his 2019 solo tour, Fogerty performed a reimagined version of "Proud Mary" with horns, inspired by Ike & Tina Turner's cover. Fogerty recently performed in Boston and is set to begin a residency in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on December 31, January 1, and January 2, with additional dates in March. He will also perform at the Festival Vive Latino 2026 in Mexico City.
