South Oak Cliff High School Football Player Arrested for Shooting Incident After State Championship Victory

An 18-year-old football player was taken into custody by the Dallas Police Department after confessing to shooting another teenager in a Dallas residence while celebrating South Oak Cliff's state championship victory. The incident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 20, in southwest Dallas, following the team's win in the 5A Division 2 UIL State Championship game. The victim was hospitalized, and his condition remains unknown.
Xavier Mayfield, the suspect, was found holding a rifle in the upstairs bathroom of the home when the shooting took place. Mayfield admitted to accidentally firing a single shot from the rifle, striking the victim in the neck. Both Mayfield and the victim are students at South Oak Cliff High School and members of the football team. Mayfield, who played in the championship game, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is currently in Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Witnesses inside the home reported seeing Mayfield swinging the rifle before the gunshot was heard. The witness stated that Mayfield claimed the rifle's safety was on before the incident occurred. The suspect was arrested at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing. The Dallas Independent School District has not yet commented on the incident.
