Introducing Matt Wells: The New Head Coach of the Colorado Rapids
The Colorado Rapids have appointed Matt Wells as their new head coach, succeeding Chris Armas. Wells joins the Rapids from Tottenham Hotspur, where he was an assistant coach. Prior to his time at Spurs, he worked as an assistant at Fulham FC, AFC Bournemouth, and Club Brugge. The club's president, Pádraig Smith, expressed excitement about Wells' Premier League experience, player development focus, and tactical expertise, which align with the Rapids' long-term vision.
Wells inherits a squad with notable US men's national team players such as Paxten Aaronson, Cole Bassett, Zack Steffen, Sam Vines, and Reggie Cannon. The team also features key contributors like Rob Holding, Rafael Navarro, and Darren Yapi. As the third-youngest head coach in MLS, Wells aims to lead the Rapids back to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2026 after missing out on postseason action in the previous season.
