Resilience and Faith: Syrian Church Honors Heroes and Victims of Terror Attack

In Dweil’a, Syria, a church congregation gathered to commemorate the 25 individuals who lost their lives in a suicide attack in June. The worshippers, including the heroes who confronted the attacker, held Mass and lit a Christmas tree adorned with photos of the victims. The attack, which took place during a Sunday service, was thwarted by Boutros and Gergis Bechara and Milad Haddad, who pushed the assailant out of the church before he detonated his explosive vest.
Thana al-Masoud, the widow of Boutros Bechara, expressed her grief over the loss of her husband, who she believes is now a martyr for their faith. The attack, attributed to an Islamic State cell, was the first of its kind in Syria in years and highlighted the ongoing sectarian violence in the country. The incident underscored the challenges faced by the new government in maintaining security and protecting religious minorities.
Despite the tragedy, many congregants find solace in their faith and believe that God's presence was felt during the attack. The priest of Mar Elias church acknowledged the prevailing fear among the Syrian people but emphasized the importance of praying for peace as Christmas approaches. The congregation's resilience and unwavering faith serve as a testament to their strength in the face of adversity.
