CBI Challenges Delhi High Court's Decision in Kuldeep Singh Sengar's Unnao Rape Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has challenged the Delhi High Court's decision to suspend the life sentence and grant bail to expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. The CBI filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court against the high court's order. The decision to file the petition was made after reviewing the orders of the Delhi High Court in the 2017 Unnao rape case.

Sengar, who is currently serving a 10-year term for the custodial death of the rape survivor's father, will remain in jail despite the high court's decision to suspend his life sentence. The former MLA had appealed against his life sentence, which was strongly opposed by the CBI and the victim's family. The CBI and the victim's family have raised concerns about safety and threats, prompting the CBI to challenge the high court's order.

The Delhi High Court had suspended Sengar's jail term in the Unnao rape case, citing that he had already served a significant portion of his sentence. Sengar's sentence was suspended until the outcome of his appeal challenging his conviction and sentence in the rape case. The high court imposed several conditions for bail, including a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh and restrictions on Sengar's proximity to the victim's residence and interactions with her and her mother.

The Unnao rape case, where Sengar was convicted of kidnapping and raping a minor girl in 2017, was transferred to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh on the Supreme Court's directive in August 2019. The CBI's decision to challenge the high court's order reflects its commitment to seeking justice in the case and ensuring the safety of the victim and her family.
