Enhancing Work Zone Safety: Arkansas Highway Patrol Introduces New Camera Technology

The Arkansas Highway Patrol (AHP) is set to implement new "work zone camera technology" to identify drivers using handheld devices in work zones. These upgraded cameras will supplement the existing speed-detection cameras used by the highway patrol to identify work zone speeding violations. The new technology is expected to be operational by mid-January. AHP Chief Jeff Holmes emphasized that using handheld devices in work zones is prohibited by Arkansas law and enforcing this law has been challenging until now. The introduction of this advanced camera technology aims to enhance safety for both road workers and the public.

The innovative camera technology is specifically designed to detect drivers holding cell phones or other handheld devices while passing through work zones. Once a driver is identified, the system will alert an officer further down the interstate who can then pull over the offender after they have exited the work zone. It is important to note that the device-detection cameras, along with speed enforcement cameras, are intended to support officers in enforcing laws within work zones. Citations will only be issued by an officer present at the scene, and tickets will not be mailed to offenders. Drivers approaching Arkansas work zones will be notified of the presence of these cameras through warning signs, emphasizing the importance of compliance with work zone regulations.

ARDOT Director Jared Wiley emphasized the paramount importance of safety for all individuals within work zones, including workers, travelers, and law enforcement officers. The implementation of this new technology serves as an additional tool for officers to uphold safety regulations enacted with the well-being of all individuals in mind. By leveraging advanced camera technology, the Arkansas Highway Patrol aims to enhance enforcement capabilities and ensure that everyone can safely reach their destinations.
