India's Auto Sales Surge in December: Tax Cuts, Promotions, and Price Hikes Drive Growth

India's auto sales saw a significant increase of about 15% year-on-year in December, driven by tax cuts, year-end promotions, and pre-New Year price hikes. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported that total sales of passenger vehicles in India reached nearly 2.03 million units last month, with car sales surging by 26.6% and two-wheeler sales rising by 9.5%. Overall retail sales in November grew by 2.1%, and for the full year, sales were up by 7.7% at 28.16 million units.

In September, India reduced the tax rate on SUVs with engine capacities over 1,500 cc to 40% and on small cars and two-wheelers up to 350 cc to 18% to stimulate consumer spending and economic growth. The lower taxes, combined with the upcoming harvest festival, weddings, and lower interest rates, are expected to drive demand in the final quarter of the financial year 2026, according to FADA's members.

A survey conducted by FADA revealed that around 70.5% of dealers anticipate growth in retail sales in January, while nearly 75% expect growth for the quarter ending on March 31. Car manufacturers have reported increased demand for small cars, with Maruti Suzuki recording a nearly 50% surge in sales of these models to dealers. Some manufacturers, including Hyundai India, JSW MG Motor India, and Renault, have raised prices for their models in January.

Despite the price hikes, Maruti Suzuki is yet to decide on revising prices for small cars. The average passenger vehicle inventory in showrooms decreased for the third consecutive month, dropping to 37-39 days in December from 44-46 days in November, as reported by FADA.

In conclusion, India's auto sales witnessed a notable increase in December, driven by various factors such as tax cuts, year-end promotions, and pre-New Year price hikes. The positive sales trend is expected to continue in the coming months, with dealers optimistic about growth in retail sales and manufacturers responding to increased demand for small cars.
