The Future of SVOD and Online Video in the Asia-Pacific Screen Industry: Trends and Forecasts up to 2030

India is set to become the largest market for SVOD subscriptions by 2030, surpassing China, with an estimated 358 million individual subscriptions. Despite this growth, India's premium VOD revenue, which includes subscriptions and advertising, will still be significantly smaller compared to China and Japan. The Asia-Pacific Video & Broadband 2026 report predicts that the region's total screen revenues will continue to rise, with a focus on streaming, social video, and connected TV, while traditional television faces challenges.

Between 2025 and 2030, the premium video on demand category is expected to see significant growth, adding around US$12.5 billion in revenue and reaching US$52 billion by the end of the decade. User-generated and social video revenues are also projected to increase by US$11.4 billion, making creator-led platforms a key growth driver in the Asia-Pacific screen economy. In contrast, traditional television revenues are expected to decline due to ongoing challenges in linear advertising and pay-TV subscriptions.

Vivek Couto, CEO of Media Partners Asia, highlighted the shift towards streaming, social platforms, and CTV-led monetization, emphasizing the importance of premium experiences, local content, and emerging formats like micro-dramas. The report forecasts a 2.8% CAGR in Asia-Pacific screen industry revenues between 2025 and 2030, with online video driving all net growth at a 7% CAGR.

The growth in premium VOD will be led by Japan, China, and India, with Australia, Korea, and Indonesia following suit. User-generated and social video revenues will increase due to advertising and expanding CTV inventory, with China, Japan, India, and Australia at the forefront. The report also notes the dominance of top online video platforms, with the top 15 platforms accounting for a significant portion of total online video revenues.

In traditional television, China, Japan, and India are expected to contribute to the majority of the region's revenue decline. The AVB 2026 report provides insights into the shifting landscape of the Asia-Pacific screen industry, with a focus on streaming, user-generated content, and social video, offering forecasts up to 2030.
