Legal Dispute Emerges Over Unpaid Fees in O.J. Simpson Estate
Following the passing of O.J. Simpson, a new legal dispute has emerged involving attorney Ronald Slates, who alleges he was not fully compensated for his legal services. Slates has filed a lawsuit against Simpson’s estate, claiming over $1 million in unpaid fees. The lawsuit targets Malcolm LaVergne, the executor of Simpson’s estate, and details Slates’ extensive legal representation of Simpson prior to his death in 2024. Despite rendering services, Slates claims that a significant portion of his fees went unpaid.
Slates continued to represent Simpson until shortly before the former NFL star's death at the age of 76. He submitted a creditor’s claim to the estate in October, which was rejected by LaVergne, who estimated the estate’s value to be between $400,000 and $500,000 at the time. This legal battle adds to the ongoing probate proceedings that have garnered national attention due to the estate’s agreement to pay nearly $58 million to Fred Goldman, the father of Ron Goldman, who was killed in 1994.
The civil judgment against Simpson, stemming from the wrongful death of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson, initially amounted to $33.5 million but grew substantially due to accrued interest over the years. Despite paying only a fraction of the sum before his death, Simpson’s estate agreed to pay nearly $58 million to Fred Goldman, with additional interest. LaVergne stated that the revised amount was a more accurate calculation, and he is working with Goldman to finalize the figures.
Slates’ lawsuit now adds another layer of complexity to the estate’s financial obligations, as his claim for unpaid legal fees conflicts with the existing commitments and limited assets of the estate. The upcoming probate court hearing is expected to address the competing claims against O.J. Simpson’s estate, including Slates’ pursuit of his outstanding fees. The resolution of these legal disputes will shed light on the financial intricacies surrounding Simpson’s estate.
