Exploring Cinema and Conversation: Highlights of the International Film Festival Rotterdam Talks Lineup

The International Film Festival Rotterdam has announced the lineup of talks for its 55th edition, featuring prominent speakers such as U.S. actor John Lithgow, Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass, and Italian actress Valeria Golino. The festival will host two types of conversations: Big Talks, focusing on diverse topics, and Tiger Talks, exploring film-related themes like feminism and colonialism. Additionally, the IFFR Pro Dialogues program will offer industry-focused discussions during the festival.
Vanja Kaludjercic, the festival director, emphasized the importance of sparking dialogue and engagement through the Talks lineup. The festival aims to provide audiences with thought-provoking discussions that offer fresh perspectives and unexpected discoveries. The Talks will cover a wide range of topics, including the creative origins of films, memory in cinema, and the sociopolitical role of the medium.
The Big Talks will feature conversations with renowned filmmakers and artists, such as Kleber Mendonça Filho, Carla Simón, and Nicolas Becker. These discussions will delve into the creative processes behind sound design, cinematography, and storytelling in cinema. The Tiger Talks will explore themes like decolonization, language in art, and the impact of queerness on filmmaking.
Guests presenting films at the festival include directors shortlisted for the Oscar for International Feature Film, such as Kleber Mendonça Filho and Annemarie Jacir. Other notable guests include actress Tilda Swinton and directors Olivier Assayas and Mario Martone. The festival will offer a diverse lineup of films and discussions, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue and exploration of contemporary cinema.
