Laurent Brossoit Traded to San Jose Sharks: Trade Details and Impact on Team Roster

Laurent Brossoit has been traded to the San Jose Sharks after a month of speculation about his potential move from the Chicago Blackhawks. The trade, announced by both teams, involved Brossoit, defenceman Nolan Allan, and a 2028 seventh-round pick going to San Jose in exchange for defencemen Ryan Ellis and Jake Furlong, along with a 2028 fourth-rounder. Brossoit, who has been playing in the AHL this season, returns to the NHL after an 18-month injury absence, bringing a cap hit of $3.3 million with him.
The 32-year-old Brossoit will join a crowded goaltending situation in San Jose, where he will compete with Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic for playing time. Nolan Allan, a 22-year-old defenceman, has played 43 NHL games with the Blackhawks, recording one goal and seven assists. Selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Allan has been productive in the AHL this season with two goals and four assists in 29 games.
Ryan Ellis, a 35-year-old defenceman, has not played in the NHL since 2022 but is under contract through next season with a $6.25 million cap hit. Jake Furlong, a 21-year-old defenceman, has yet to make his NHL debut but has shown promise in the AHL with nine goals and 20 assists in 78 games with the San Jose Barracuda.
The NHL trade deadline is approaching, with teams having until February 4th to make deals before the Olympic break. The trade deadline itself is set for March 6th, giving teams a final opportunity to make roster adjustments before the end of the season.
