Protest Escalation at Hilton Canopy Hotel: 30 Individuals Detained and Cited by Minneapolis Police

A protest outside the Hilton Canopy Hotel in downtown Minneapolis escalated on Friday night, leading to the detention and citation of 30 individuals by the Minneapolis police. The protest initially started with a crowd of several hundred people gathering near the Canopy Hotel on the 700 block of 3rd Street South around 8:00 p.m. The group later moved to the Depot Renaissance Hotel, where property damage was reported. Protesters targeted these hotels because they believe ICE agents are staying there as guests.

Throughout the night, individuals threw snow, ice, and rocks at officers, police vehicles, and other vehicles in the roadway. At 8:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a vehicle being driven at a building, but found no visible damage when they arrived on the scene. They later discovered that a "belligerent and possibly intoxicated woman" had parked the car on the sidewalk and entered a nearby hotel. Around 9:45 p.m., the protest returned to the Canopy Hotel, with some members of the group attempting to force their way into the hotel through an alleyway entrance.

Approximately 30 minutes later, police declared an unlawful assembly and began issuing dispersal orders. Subsequently, they started detaining and citing individuals who were causing problems. In total, at least 30 people were cited by the police during the protest outside the Hilton Canopy Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.
