Slovakia and U.S. to Sign Nuclear Power Cooperation Agreement: A Milestone in Energy Infrastructure Development
Slovakia is set to enter into a nuclear power cooperation agreement with the United States, according to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The agreement, to be signed next week, is part of Slovakia's plan to construct a new nuclear power unit with the assistance of U.S. company Westinghouse. The new plant is expected to have a capacity of nearly 1,200 megawatts, surpassing the size of the current nuclear power units in the country. Fico expressed his intention to be present at the signing of the broader U.S.-Slovak cooperation agreement in the nuclear sector in Washington.
The Slovak government has been engaged in discussions with the U.S. since last year regarding the construction of a large nuclear plant. Fico revealed that the new facility would be established on the premises of the existing nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice under state ownership. The specifics of the agreement and the signing ceremony were not disclosed by Fico. In October, the Slovak government approved an inter-governmental agreement with the U.S. for the development of the new unit. Fico also mentioned that U.S. President Donald Trump had extended an invitation for him to visit the United States for the signing of the nuclear power deal between the two countries during this year's soccer World Cup.
The collaboration between Slovakia and the United States in the nuclear power sector is a significant step towards enhancing the country's energy infrastructure. The construction of a new nuclear power unit with U.S. support underscores Slovakia's commitment to expanding its energy capabilities and ensuring a reliable power supply for its citizens. The upcoming agreement signing in Washington signifies the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations in the field of nuclear energy. Slovakia's pursuit of nuclear power cooperation with the U.S. reflects its strategic approach to meeting its energy needs and fostering technological advancements in the sector.
