Spotlight on Emerging Filmmakers: Winners of the Film Independent Spirit Awards Grants

The Film Independent Spirit Awards recently awarded three $25,000 cash grants to emerging filmmakers Tony Yang, Rajee Samarasinghe, and Tatti Ribeiro at the annual Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominees Brunch held at the London Hotel in Santa Monica. The awards were presented by Hannah Einbinder and Natasha Rothwell. Tony Yang received the Producers Award, Tatti Ribeiro was honored with the Someone to Watch Award, and Rajee Samarasinghe received the Truer Than Fiction Award. The winners were announced in advance of the upcoming ceremony on Feb. 15. The event typically takes place near the beach in Santa Monica, but this year it was moved to the Hollywood Palladium due to construction. Nominees in attendance included Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke, Tessa Thompson, Kirsten Dunst, and Stephen Graham.
The Producers Award recognizes emerging producers who demonstrate creativity, tenacity, and vision in producing quality independent films. The Someone to Watch Award salutes talented filmmakers of singular vision who have not yet received appropriate recognition. The Truer Than Fiction Award is presented to emerging directors of nonfiction features who have not yet received significant recognition. The winners of these awards were Tony Yang, Tatti Ribeiro, and Rajee Samarasinghe, respectively.
