Remembering Bob Weir: A Tribute to the Co-Founder of the Grateful Dead

Bob Weir, the co-founder, guitarist, and singer of the Grateful Dead, has passed away at the age of 78 after battling cancer and lung issues. The announcement was made on Weir's official social media page, revealing that he was diagnosed in July 2025. Despite his health struggles, Weir performed with the band's offshoot Dead and Company in August to celebrate the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary in San Francisco.
Weir and Jerry Garcia founded the Grateful Dead in 1965, leading the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in the '60s. The band gained fame for their live performances rather than their recorded music, attracting a dedicated following of "Deadheads" who followed them from show to show. After Garcia's death in 1995, Weir continued touring with the Dead and later formed Dead & Company.
With Weir's passing, drummer Bill Kreutzmann is now the only surviving founding member of the Grateful Dead. Bassist Phil Lesh passed away in 2024, and singer/keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan in 1973. Weir's legacy as a musician and his contributions to the music industry will be remembered by fans and fellow musicians alike.
