Toronto FC in Advanced Talks to Sign American Forward Josh Sargent for Record Fee

Toronto FC is currently in negotiations to secure the services of Norwich City's Josh Sargent, with an official bid of $18 million on the table for the American forward. If the deal goes through, Sargent could potentially become the most expensive signing in Toronto FC's history. The current record for the highest transfer fee in Major League Soccer belongs to Son Heung-min, who moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Angeles FC for $26.5 million in August.

Originally from Missouri, Sargent has been in fine form in England's second tier, scoring seven goals in 23 appearances this season. His most prolific season in the Championship came in 2023-24 when he netted 16 goals. Sargent has previously played in the Premier League for Norwich City and in Germany for Werder Bremen.

With 29 caps for the United States men's national team and five international goals to his name, Sargent is a seasoned player. However, his playing time has been limited recently, featuring in just one match in 2025. As the USMNT prepares for the upcoming World Cup, manager Mauricio Pochettino has opted for other forwards like Folarin Balogun and Haji Wright in the No. 9 position.

In the 2024 MLS season, Toronto FC's top scorer was Theo Corbeanu with six goals. The team finished 12th in the Eastern Conference out of 15 teams, scoring a total of 37 goals in 34 matches. If Sargent joins Toronto FC, he could provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options and help improve their performance in the upcoming season.
