Proposed Speed Limit Changes in Co Wexford: Enhancing Road Safety Through Reduced Speeds
A proposal has been put forward to reduce speed limits to 30km/h in built-up and urban areas in Co Wexford, including Gorey's Main Street. The plan involves a phased approach, with the first phase focusing on built-up and urban areas. Wexford County Council will review existing speed limits and adjust them according to DOT guidelines. The second phase will target national secondary roads, such as the N80, with a proposed reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h. The third phase will prioritize setting a 30km/h speed limit on roads near schools, with options for permanent or periodic limits.
Before implementing the speed limit changes, draft by-laws will be prepared based on input from various stakeholders. These by-laws are expected to be adopted in October, with changes planned for March 2027. WCC's road safety officer, David Codd, presented the proposed changes at district meetings, receiving mixed feedback from elected representatives. Concerns were raised about the timing of school road reviews and the prioritization of school safety in the process.
In response to queries from councillors, Mr. Codd clarified that all roads of concern would be included in the review, with the DOT directive recommending a reduction to 80km/h on national secondary roads. The installation of new signs featuring the number 30 was confirmed, addressing previous concerns about sign design. Discussions also touched on the enforcement of speed limits in housing estates and the challenges of monitoring speeds in these areas.
Overall, the proposed speed limit changes aim to enhance road safety in Co Wexford by reducing speeds in key areas. Feedback and comments on speed limits in the county can be submitted to [email protected].
