Debating ICE Enforcement: Public Safety, Politics, and Democratic Principles
Anti-ICE activists have a clear goal that does not prioritize reducing violence. One effective way to decrease the threat of violence surrounding ICE enforcement is to have local law enforcement cooperate with ICE. This approach has been advocated by a former DOJ prosecutor and an ex-FBI agent and cop. Red states have seen fewer violent incidents related to ICE enforcement due to the cooperation between local authorities and ICE. Democrats face a choice between directing local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE or making their communities more dangerous.
Opposition to ICE enforcement is not primarily driven by concerns for public safety. Some Northern Virginia police departments have released alleged child sex offenders into the community instead of honoring federal immigration detainers. This raises the question of whether having ICE agents in the community is less safe than allowing sex offenders to roam freely. The resistance to federal immigration law in many communities and states is motivated by various factors, including political considerations and the desire to nullify federal immigration laws.
There is evidence of coordinated opposition to federal immigration law, with some organizations advocating for confrontations with ICE agents to incite a "micro-intifada." This extremist approach is concerning, especially when language borrowed from terrorist groups like Hamas is used to support the cause. Ground-level activists often view confronting ICE as a noble cause that gives purpose to their lives. However, engaging in insurrection and attempting to overturn election results are actions that go against democratic principles.
Public opinion on immigration enforcement has been divided, with Joe Biden's lenient stance on illegal immigration contributing to his low approval ratings. In contrast, former President Trump's emphasis on tough immigration enforcement resonated with many voters. ICE is responsible for enforcing existing laws that have been democratically enacted. Local and state governments have the authority to facilitate the enforcement of immigration laws in a less contentious and violent manner. Despite differing opinions, ICE enforcement is a reflection of democracy in action.
