Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment Strike $7 Billion-Plus Pay-1 Licensing Deal for Global Streaming

Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have reached a groundbreaking $7 billion-plus worldwide Pay-1 licensing agreement for Sony's movies to be streamed on Netflix globally after their theatrical and home entertainment releases. This deal marks a significant shift in the overseas pay-1 window for Sony movies, consolidating their availability on Netflix. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sony movies like "Anyone But You" and "It Ends With Us" have consistently been top performers on Netflix, with titles like "KPop Demon Hunters" achieving half a billion views on the platform. Netflix's previous pay-1 deal with Sony focused on select feature films and television library titles. The new global agreement builds on this partnership and will gradually roll out later this year, with full global availability on Netflix by early 2029 through 2032.

Netflix currently holds Pay-1 rights to Sony's feature films in specific territories, including the U.S., Germany, and Southeast Asia. Hit films from the existing deal include "Uncharted," "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," and "Venom: The Last Dance." The new deal with Sony will see a 40% increase in the rate card for Sony titles, with a significant portion of the increase coming from international markets.

Upcoming Sony movies like "The Nightingale," "Buds," "The Legend of Zelda," and "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" will be part of the new deal with Netflix. This agreement comes as Netflix continues to expand its content library through partnerships with major studios like Warner Bros and Universal. The Sony deal serves as evidence of Netflix's commitment to licensing content from third parties.

In a statement, Netflix's VP of Licensing and Programming Strategy, Lauren Smith, highlighted the value of offering exclusive access to Sony's films to Netflix subscribers worldwide. Sony Pictures Television's EVP of Global Distribution, Paul Littmann, emphasized the enduring partnership with Netflix and the mutual benefits it brings to both companies and their audiences. The new Pay-1 deal signifies a deepening collaboration between Netflix and Sony, showcasing the appeal of Sony's content to a global audience.
