Pete Townshend: A Musical Journey from 'It Was You' to 'Bubbles

Pete Townshend's musical journey began with his early composition, "It Was You," released in 1964 by The Naturals. Townshend's musical roots trace back to his childhood, where he was exposed to music through his father, a jazz musician for the RAF dance band. His first foray into songwriting was at the age of 11 with his childhood friend Graham Beard, inspired by the emergence of skiffle and rock 'n' roll in the 1950s.
Townshend's musical influences expanded as he received his first guitar, a handmade one by Beard's father, and later an inexpensive Spanish guitar from his grandmother. Collaborating with Beard, they penned their early song "Bubbles," reflecting the innocence of young love and influenced by Bill Haley's music. Despite his father's classical music background, Townshend's musical aspirations were not initially supported, as his father encouraged him to pursue other careers like journalism or art.
While Townshend's father didn't fully understand his musical path, he recognized his son's talent in other areas like painting. Despite the initial lack of support for his musical endeavors, Townshend's passion for music and songwriting continued to grow, leading him on a unique journey that would shape his future in the music industry.
