Seattle Mayor Announces Executive Orders to Address Homelessness and Improve Public Transit

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson recently announced her first two executive orders aimed at addressing homelessness and improving public transit in the city. The orders are designed to expedite the expansion of emergency shelter and housing options for people living unsheltered while also enhancing bus reliability on a busy corridor.

The first executive order directs city departments to identify and address regulatory and logistical barriers that hinder the development of shelter and housing projects. The city will prioritize the use of city-owned land and collaborate with other government agencies to identify additional public property for shelter and housing. The order also emphasizes expanding capacity at existing shelter programs and providing support for substance-use treatment and mental health counseling within shelter and housing programs.

The second executive order focuses on improving public transit by adding bus lanes or other transit-priority infrastructure along Denny Way, a key east-west corridor served by Route 8. The goal is to enhance transit efficiency and reduce delays for riders. The Seattle Department of Transportation is tasked with developing a timeline, budget, and implementation plan for transit-priority improvements on Denny Way and recommending similar investments for other corridors.

Mayor Wilson emphasized the urgency of these actions, particularly with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and highlighted the need for fast, frequent, reliable, safe, and welcoming transit in Seattle. The executive orders are just the beginning of a broader effort to address housing and transit challenges in the city, with more policy decisions expected in the future as the administration collaborates with community groups and regional partners.
