Kenyan Photographer Mwangi Kirubi Makes History with Gold Win at 2026 World Sports Photography Awards

Kenyan photographer Mwangi Kirubi, also known as Mwarv, made history by winning Gold in the Motor Sports category at the 2026 World Sports Photography Awards (WSPA). His winning photo, titled "Emerging Ford," captured rally drivers Grégoire Munster and Louis Louka in action during the Shakedown stage at the WRC Safari Rally in Kenya. Kirubi's use of a Canon R5C camera and RF 100–500mm lens resulted in a visually striking image that stood out among thousands of entries from over 100 countries.

Kirubi's accreditation for the 2021 Safari Rally marked the beginning of his journey to becoming the first Kenyan photographer to win a Gold medal at the World Sports Photography Awards. His consistent coverage of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya over the years culminated in this prestigious recognition. The Shakedown stage provided Kirubi with the opportunity to experiment with different shooting positions and ultimately capture the award-winning moment that impressed the judges.

The World Sports Photography Awards, established in 2020, are renowned for celebrating the best in sports photography. Kirubi's achievement not only brought him global exposure and professional recognition but also highlighted the talent of Kenyan photographers on an international stage. With support from organizations like World Sports Pix and Canon, photographers like Kirubi are able to showcase their work and contribute to the growing recognition of Kenyan photographers in the global photography community.
