Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Two Women in Southwest Birmingham

Two women tragically lost their lives in a fatal collision involving a freight train in southwest Birmingham. The victims, identified as Carolyn Elaine Berry, 47, and Aldereka Laqulla Ikes, 36, both residents of Birmingham, were passengers in a minivan that was struck by the train. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning on 24th Street SW.

The minivan, carrying a total of six individuals, including two adults and four juveniles, attempted to cross the railroad tracks when it was hit by the oncoming train. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Berry was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ikes was rushed to UAB Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

The Birmingham Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.
