A major multi-part auction is set to take place at Christie's in New York in March, featuring legendary musical instruments, handwritten manuscripts, and historic sports memorabilia from the Jim Irsay Collection. The collection, owned by the late US billionaire businessman and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, is considered one of the most significant private collections of its kind. Iconic instruments from rock history will be up for auction, including a 1966 Fender Mustang once owned by Kurt Cobain, a black Fender Stratocaster used by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and instruments owned by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and James Brown.
The auction will also include a handwritten manuscript of Bob Dylan's song "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and memorabilia from The Beatles, such as Ringo Starr's bass drum head from The Ed Sullivan Show, Starr's first Ludwig drum kit, guitars played by John Lennon and George Harrison, a handwritten draft of "Hey Jude" by Paul McCartney, and the sworn affidavit documenting the Beatles' breakup. The auction will be held in four segments from March 3 to March 17, with both in-person and online bidding available.
The highlight of the auction is expected to be the 1966 Fender Mustang once owned by Kurt Cobain, with an estimated bid of up to $US5 million. Other notable items include David Gilmour's black Fender Stratocaster, Miles Davis's trumpet, John Coltrane's saxophone, and James Brown's cape.
