Board of Peace: A New Global Initiative for Gaza Reconstruction and Conflict Resolution

A new global body called the Board of Peace, led by President Donald Trump, has invited several countries to join its ranks to oversee the next steps in Gaza. Hungary and Vietnam have already accepted the invitation. Permanent membership on the board requires a $1 billion contribution, while a three-year appointment has no contribution requirement. The funds raised will be used for the reconstruction of Gaza.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Vietnam’s Communist Party chief, To Lam, have accepted the invitation to join the Board of Peace. India, Australia, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus, Pakistan, Canada, Turkey, Egypt, Paraguay, Argentina, and Albania have also received invitations. The official list of members is expected to be announced during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

The Board of Peace will oversee the next steps in Gaza, including the ceasefire, the establishment of a new Palestinian committee, the deployment of an international security force, disarmament of Hamas, and the reconstruction of the war-torn territory. President Trump sees the board as a bold new approach to resolving global conflicts and potentially a rival to the U.N. Security Council.

The U.N. Security Council has been unable to take action to end the war in Gaza due to U.S. vetoes, while the U.N.'s influence has been weakened by funding cuts. The Board of Peace is based on a 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan endorsed by the Security Council. An executive committee has been formed to carry out the board's vision, but Israel has raised objections to the committee's formation without coordination.

The executive committee includes U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Tony Blair, Ajay Banga, Robert Gabriel, and others. Representatives from ceasefire monitors Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey are also part of the committee. Turkey, with strained relations with Israel but good ties with Hamas, could play a crucial role in persuading Hamas to relinquish power in Gaza and disarm.

In conclusion, the Board of Peace is a new initiative led by President Trump to address global conflicts, with a focus on Gaza. The involvement of various countries and leaders signals a potential shift in global diplomacy and conflict resolution efforts. The board's formation and activities will be closely watched as it seeks to make a meaningful impact on the situation in Gaza and beyond.
