Among the candidates considered were defensive coordinators Chris Shula, Anthony Campanile, Robert Saleh, and Jesse Minter.
Jesse Minter, who helped the Los Angeles Chargers achieve a top-five ranking in total defense this season, was also a candidate for head coaching positions in other NFL teams. Robert Saleh was the only candidate with prior head coaching experience, which would have been a departure from the Dolphins' tradition of hiring first-time head coaches under owner Stephen Ross. Anthony Campanile had strong ties to the organization, having previously coached Miami's linebackers and worked with the new Dolphins general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, during their time with the Green Bay Packers.
In addition to Jeff Hafley, other candidates interviewed by the Dolphins included Kevin Stefanski, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, and Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. The decision to hire Hafley comes at a time when the Dolphins are undergoing a larger organizational reset following a disappointing 7-10 season. The team has had two consecutive losing seasons and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. The firing of longtime general manager Chris Grier in October signaled the start of a rebuild, with Hafley now leading the way.
