Reviving British Sci-Fi: Multitude Productions' Reboot of Blake's 7 and Genre-Based Content Strategy

Peter Hoar, the Emmy-nominated director of The Last of Us, has recently launched Multitude Productions, a genre-based indie production company. Together with Matthew Bouch and Jason Haigh-Ellery, they have acquired the rights to the cult British sci-fi classic Blake's 7 for a reboot. The original series, created by Terry Nation, aired on the BBC over four seasons from 1978 to 1981, following the story of political dissident Roj Blake and his rebel group fighting against the totalitarian Terran Federation. Multitude Productions plans to bring a fresh take on the series, with Hoar set to direct the reboot.

The team at Multitude Productions aims to revitalize the genre-based British IP landscape, especially with the recent decline in high-end scripted shows like Doctor Who. They believe that there is a market for British genre content and are looking to merge the British low-budget sensibility with international markets. With a focus on creating compelling and economically viable content, they are also working on TV adaptations of Luke Rhinehart's The Search for the Dice Man and Patrick Carman's Skeleton Creek book series, along with other projects in development.

Multitude Productions is embracing a collaborative approach to content creation, championing a multi-writer model to bring fresh perspectives to their projects. With a diverse slate of genre-based content in the works, including adaptations of video games and novels, the team is confident in their ability to navigate the challenging market landscape. By combining their expertise in international and British productions, they hope to carve out a niche for themselves in the industry and deliver engaging and innovative storytelling to audiences worldwide.
