Slim Whitman, born on January 20, 1923, in Tampa, Florida, started his music career after serving in the military. Initially gaining popularity in the United States, he later found success in the European market, setting a chart record that lasted for decades. Utilizing TV marketing, Whitman became a household name across the United States.

While Whitman's passion for music was evident through his singing, yodeling, and guitar playing skills, his initial dream was to become a professional baseball player. However, his talent for music shone during his time in the Navy, where his performances boosted morale among his shipmates and ultimately saved his life.

After leaving the Navy, Whitman pursued a career in baseball before transitioning to music in 1948. His breakthrough came when Colonel Tom Parker, who managed Eddy Arnold and later Elvis Presley, heard him perform and helped him secure a recording contract with RCA. Despite initial setbacks, Whitman's career flourished with regular appearances on The Louisiana Hayride and a morning radio show.

Signing with Imperial Records in 1952, Whitman achieved his first hit with "Love Song of the Waterfall," followed by several top 10 hits. His breakthrough came in 1955 when "Rose Marie" topped the UK Singles Chart for 11 weeks, setting a record that stood for 36 years.

Although more popular in the UK than in the US, Whitman's influence extended to artists like George Harrison, who credited him with inspiring his musical journey. Whitman's use of TV marketing in the late 1970s and 1980s propelled him to new levels of stardom in the US, leading to appearances on popular shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Despite premature reports of his death on his 85th birthday in 2008, Slim Whitman passed away on June 19, 2013, at the age of 90 due to heart failure. His legacy as a versatile musician and pioneer in TV album marketing continues to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
