Transfer Rumors: Aston Villa Eyes Mateta, Palace Considers Guessand
Aston Villa is eyeing Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, while Palace is considering a move for Evann Guessand. Villa's head coach Unai Emery is looking to bolster the team's attacking options, with Mateta and Tammy Abraham being considered. Talks between Villa and Besiktas for Abraham have not progressed, with Besiktas deeming Palace's asking price for Mateta too high. Mateta, who has scored eight goals in 22 Premier League games this season, is attracting interest despite turning 29 soon and having his contract expiring next year.
Guessand, who joined Villa from Nantes, has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, failing to score in 13 appearances. In contrast, he has scored twice in six Europa League matches. Mateta, on the other hand, had a prolific season last year, scoring 17 goals in 47 games as Palace won the FA Cup. He has a total of 56 goals in 185 appearances for Palace, having previously played for Mainz, Le Harve, and Lyon.
Palace has already seen captain Marc Guehi depart for Manchester City for around £20 million. Additionally, Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed his departure from the club at the end of the season. The transfer window continues to be active for both Villa and Palace as they look to strengthen their squads for the remainder of the season.
