Maryland Stadium Authority Acquires Laurel Park: A New Era for Maryland Horse Racing

The Maryland Stadium Authority has announced its acquisition of Laurel Park from The Stronach Group to transform it into a thoroughbred training facility. This move is expected to save around $50 million and ensure the future of Maryland's horse racing industry. The purchase signifies a strategic shift in the state's plans for the renovation of Pimlico Race Course.
Chairman Craig A. Thompson stated that this action is the beginning of a new era for Maryland's thoroughbred racing legacy. The acquisition of Laurel Park by the Maryland Stadium Authority will allow the Maryland Jockey Club to continue managing the daily operations at the facility. The state will consolidate racing and training activities at the new statewide training center.
Pimlico Race Course will adopt a "ship-in" racing model, where horses and trainers will travel to the venue on race days from other facilities. This change is expected to save the state approximately $26.3 million in stall construction costs at Pimlico. Additionally, an estimated $22.5 million will be saved by exploring alternatives for the event center at Pimlico. The Stadium Authority still plans to create gathering spaces at Pimlico's enhanced clubhouse, including a restaurant, sports bar, and meeting spaces for up to 1,500 people.
Maryland Jockey Club Executive Director Bill Knauf emphasized that using Pimlico as a ship-in track will enhance operational efficiency while maintaining Laurel Park as the primary training center. The acquisition of Laurel Park will facilitate a seamless transition from racetrack to training facility, minimizing disruptions for horsemen and staff.
The 151st Preakness Stakes is scheduled to take place at Laurel Park on May 16, 2026, before returning to a revamped Pimlico Race Course in spring 2027. Once completed, Pimlico will serve as the permanent home of Maryland horse racing, hosting approximately 120 racing days annually. This strategic realignment aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of Maryland's horse racing industry.
