Tragic Consequences: Undocumented Immigrant Charged in Fatal Car Accident in North Carolina

A judge in North Carolina set a $5 million bond for Juan Alvarado Aguilar, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who was charged with causing the deaths of two individuals in a car accident. The incident occurred when Aguilar allegedly crossed a double-yellow line and collided with a vehicle carrying Fletcher Harris and Skylar Provenza. Both Harris and Provenza were killed in the crash, and authorities reported that Aguilar's breath smelled of alcohol at the scene.

Following the accident, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for Aguilar after a Mexican passport was found on the scene. Aguilar, who also faced charges of failure to appear and driving while intoxicated, had a previous arrest in 2020 for drunk driving in Carrabus County, North Carolina.

Catawba College's Vice President for Athletics, Michelle Caddigan, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Fletcher Harris, describing him as an outstanding student, athlete, and friend. Aguilar's actions have had a devastating impact on the victims' families, friends, and the college community.

The tragic incident underscores the importance of enforcing immigration laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.
