Georgia's Flavorful Legacy: The Push to Recognize Lemon Pepper as the State's Signature Chicken Wing Flavor

Georgia lawmakers are known for tackling important issues during the General Assembly sessions, such as taxes, education, and the state budget. Recently, a proposal has been introduced to officially recognize lemon pepper as Georgia’s signature chicken wing flavor. House Bill 1013, sponsored by Rep. Eric Bell, aims to designate lemon pepper as the state’s official chicken wing flavor, joining other cultural symbols like the peach and the Cherokee rose. The bill emphasizes the significance of lemon pepper wings in Georgia’s culinary landscape, tracing their popularity back to the 1980s when Atlanta-based J.R. Crickets helped introduce them locally.

The bill portrays lemon pepper wings as more than just a food item, highlighting their evolution into Atlanta staples like “lemon pepper wet,” hot honey lemon pepper, and orders of “all flats.” It draws parallels between the symbolic importance of peaches to Georgia’s agricultural heritage and lemon pepper wings to the state’s cultural flavor and culinary influence. Lemon pepper has also made its mark in Atlanta’s music scene, with artists like Gucci Mane and Rick Ross referencing the flavor in their work.

The proposal underscores the widespread adoption of lemon pepper beyond food culture, with former NBA player Lou Williams earning the nickname “Lemon Pepper Lou” during his time with the Hawks. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has embraced the term “lemon pepper head,” and even local law enforcement agencies have playfully incorporated the seasoning into their social media posts. This initiative follows previous efforts by Georgia legislators to designate food items like cornbread and Brunswick stew as state symbols.

House Bill 1013 is currently in the legislative process, awaiting committee review and votes in both chambers. If passed without amendments, the bill will proceed to Gov. Brian Kemp for final approval. The recognition of lemon pepper as Georgia’s official chicken wing flavor would solidify its place as a cultural icon representing the state’s culinary heritage and global influence.
