Immerse Yourself in the Music and Memories: Cult Classics Cinema Celebrates Black Films and Soundtracks

Some movies are remembered for their captivating plots and memorable characters, while others leave a lasting impact because of their music. At a recent screening of Forest Whitaker’s 1995 film “Waiting to Exhale” at the Miracle Theater in Inglewood, attendees were transported back to the ‘90s as they sang along to songs from the Grammy-winning soundtrack. The event, part of the Cult Classics Cinema series, celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary and highlighted the iconic R&B tracks featured in the movie.

Cult Classics Cinema, founded by Diamora Hunt, also known as DJ Rosegawd, is a unique event series that combines movie screenings with listening parties. Each month, a beloved Black film is shown, followed by a casual gathering where the soundtrack is played in its entirety. The communal atmosphere of the events allows attendees to geek out over films and music while honoring Black stories and culture.

Hunt, a seasoned DJ, has always been drawn to the power of music. During the COVID lockdown, she hosted live DJ sets on Twitch, focusing on female artists like Missy Elliott and Beyoncé. Her passion for music led her to create Club Renaissance, a dance party featuring Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album, which quickly gained popularity in L.A. and beyond. Inspired by the success of her music events, Hunt launched Cult Classics Cinema to celebrate beloved albums and movies.

Since its inception, Cult Classics Cinema has hosted screenings of films like “Boomerang” and “Soul Food” at the Miracle Theater in Inglewood. The events offer a unique experience for movie lovers, combining trivia, themed cocktails, and interactive elements that immerse attendees in the world of the film. The recent screening of “Waiting to Exhale” brought together fans who laughed, cheered, and sang along to the iconic soundtrack, creating a sense of community and nostalgia.

For attendees like Deonna Tillman and Felisha Fowlkes, Cult Classics Cinema provides a rare opportunity to watch and celebrate Black classics in a communal setting. The events offer a chance to connect with the music and emotions of the films, creating a memorable experience for fans of all ages. As the series continues to grow, Hunt hopes to bring more beloved albums and movies to the screen, inviting audiences to rediscover and celebrate the music and stories that have shaped our culture.
