Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison Challenges Trump Administration's Immigration Enforcement Tactics

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has criticized the Trump administration for turning immigration enforcement into a political tool, calling the increased presence of federal agents in the Twin Cities a constitutional crisis. Ellison expressed concern over the lack of evidence of a federal investigation into the shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer. He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation into such incidents in Minnesota.

Ellison disputed the Department of Homeland Security's claims regarding the case of 5-year-old Liam Ramos, who was taken into ICE custody. He rejected the assertion that the boy had been abandoned and criticized the treatment of Ramos as part of ICE's deportation efforts. Ellison highlighted the moral implications of using a child as bait and condemned such actions by federal authorities.

The Attorney General, along with the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, filed a federal lawsuit to halt what they deemed as unlawful tactics by federal law enforcement in Minnesota. Ellison argued that the surge of federal agents was politically motivated, driven by President Trump's dissatisfaction with the election results. He raised concerns about warrantless arrests, racial profiling, and excessive detention, which are central to the lawsuit against DHS.

Ellison emphasized the financial burden imposed on state and local governments by the DHS operation, citing the costs of crowd control, overtime, and emergency response. He also highlighted the numerous injury complaints related to the use of force by federal agents. Ellison vowed to challenge unconstitutional policies, such as the authorization for ICE agents to enter homes without a warrant, and reiterated the state's commitment to upholding the law.

In response to claims of non-cooperation with ICE detainers, Ellison clarified that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and that the state must adhere to its laws and court orders. He explained that Minnesota's laws sometimes prevent the state from assisting ICE in certain situations, such as holding individuals beyond their sentence. While cooperation with ICE detainers varies across counties, Ellison stressed the state's commitment to following the law and maintaining ethical standards in dealing with federal immigration enforcement.
